Deer Mountain Day Camp was founded by Mel Katz in 1956. His wife Rita joined the Deer Mountain team in 1974.
Now in its second generation, their daughters are at the helm, leading the camp with the same personal,
pro-active approach that the camp has been known for since its inception.

Roberta's training as a Camp Director began when she was 3. After spending many years as a Deer Mountain camper
and counselor, Roberta went on to the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a BS in Economics from the Wharton
School, a BAS from the School of Engineering & Applied Science, and an MBA from the Wharton School. While in
business school, Roberta worked as a Consultant and Instructor of Entrepreneurship for the Wharton Small Business
Development Center. An active member of the American Camp Association, Roberta has served on a number of committees
as well as the New York Section Board of Directors as Secretary as well as Vice President of Day Camps. Roberta
joined her parents, as an owner and director in 1993. She combines professional management and teaching experience
with a life long love for camp and working with kids.

Carol also brings a lifetime of Deer Mountain training and experience from being a camper, counselor and division leader.
Carol holds a BA in Human Development from Cornell University and a Masters in Education with a focus on Learning Sciences
from Northwestern University. Her professional experience includes work at Classroom Inc., where she designed educational
software and worked with school systems throughout the country to integrate problem based software into the classroom.
Carol also worked at Children's Television Workshop where she conducted research for television shows such as Square One
TV and Ghostwriter as well as Channel 13 where she developed outreach programs for different educational television shows.
Carol brought her child development, management and technical skills back to Deer Mountain, joining her sister full time
in December 2002.

Mel & Rita dedicated their entire professional lives to educating and developing recreational programs for
children. In addition to founding Deer Mountain, both taught and directed after school programs in the
New York City school system. Mel completed his Bachelor of Arts in Education and part of his Doctorate
at New York University. Rita completed her Bachelor of Arts in Education at Queens College and her Masters
training at Yeshiva University, City College and Columbia University.
